Separate sex wards welcomed at Midland Hospitals. But why the sudden change of heart?
Most people have visited someone in hospital over the past say, 10 years or so. It is undignified for old ladies getting out of bed to walk to the toilet in their dressing gowns in front of male patients and visitors. If your mother or grandmother has ever had to stay overnight, some of the stories they tell are not pleasant. Men masturbating in the next bed for example, or even the thought of sexual attention from male patients while lying in a hospital bed trying to recover.
For these reasons it is good news for patients and their families that mixed sex wards are to be phased out. When we think of the rationale behind the decision however we might not be so grateful.
Peter Blythin, director of nursing for the health authority, said: “Our patients rightly expect to be treated with dignity and respect in their contact with NHS services and this is a top priority for us. Fine but why is it a top priority all of a sudden? Could it be that the NHS is swamped with Muslims and they have been complaining on religious grounds? I would hazard a guess this is the case.
